Two-wheelers and three-wheelers with two-stroke engines will soon be scrapped off the roads, transport commissioner Bhaskar Rao announced while launching the first computerised emission testing centre (ETC) at the Sree Venkateshwara service station on Old Madras Road on Monday.

“We will make sure to pull off all the two-stroke vehicles emitting huge carbons in environment by February 2011. I wonder why city residents go out of the city limits to buy two-stroke vehicles, instead of buying four-stroke vehicles available within the city,” said Rao.

Meanwhile, the transport department has set up about 460 ETCs state-wide which will become functional by the end of December.

These computers located at different service stations will maintain a check on the testing centres in surrounding areas and all will be connected to the main server at the department headquarters.
