The death toll at Beggars’ Colony near Kamakshipalya has touched 29 as two more deaths were reported since Monday night.
Officials said that one inmate, aged about 50, died on Monday night at the Victoria Hospital.
Another inmate, who had actually escaped from the colony late last week, died within hours of him being brought back to the colony by the Kamakshipalya police. The police had found him at the Sharada Colony bus stop. The police have filed a case of unnatural death. The body has been sent to the Victoria Hospital for the post-mortem examination.
Dr G Harimurthy, medical officer of the colony, said that 48 inmates were shifted to the Victoria Hospital on Tuesday morning after they complained of general ailments. None of them were in danger and they were sent to the hospital only as a precautionary action, he added.
The cautious officials of the colony have taken the lists of the inmates and their biometric details to identify them in the future.
They were helped by a private institution, who reached the colony to identify the mentally retarded inmates and separate them from others.
Meanwhile, the state government on Tuesday suspended a superintendent of the colony.
Superintendent Lakshminarasimhaiah was on duty when the tragic deaths occurred in the colony recently. Earlier, he was asked to go on leave after the incident came to light.
Congress leader VS Ugrappa along with MLA NL Narendra Babu and party workers visited the colony and tied rakhis to the inmates.
