If you thought Swami Nithayananda Paramahamsa’s luck could not get any worse, think again. In the most recent of developments, two complaints were lodged against the swami, who reportedly went mum over the last few days due to a self-imposed maun vrath (oath of silence).

A former zilla parishad president from Mandya district was the first to lodge a complaint against the swami on Friday. In a statement to the Ramanagaram district police, Guru Charan, nephew of Union external affairs minister SM Krishna, alleged that he had come to know about the spiritual leader indulging in several illegal activities.

Speaking to the police, he said, “I have come forward on my own to file a complaint against the spiritual leader, who has hurt the religious sentiments of the people of Karnataka. This is required as no other person from the state has come forward to lodge any complaint against him till date.” The complaint also stated that he had cheated several persons, besides tainting the image of spiritual leaders.

Sources said that Charan, the son of SM Krishna’s brother and former MLC SM Shankar, also submitted several newspaper clippings – including one from DNA – to the police in Bidadi.
Praveen, a Kannada movie star who had featured in the movie Sakhi, also approached the police with a similar complaint. According to sources, Praveen and Charan, both residents of Mandya, are close friends.

Meanwhile, the Ramanagaram district police think that Nithyananda’s troubles are only beginning. According to investigating officers, many more complaints of a similar nature are expected from other quarters too.

Speaking on the subject, an investigating officer said, “Many leaders of pro-Kannada organisations such as the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike and Jaya Karnataka have been hinting that they will file complaints against the spiritual leader. We are keeping a close watch over them because we suspect that they have plans to start attacking the Bidadi ashram again, once the swami returns. We have given adequate protection to the ashram, so as to prevent the occurrence of any untoward incidents. In any case, we can at least expect some police complaints from their side.”

The officer said that the fresh complaints will be added to the original one filed at the Bidadi police station. The earlier FIR was registered with the Tamil Nadu police by K Lenin, a former aide who alleged that the swami was taking undue advantage of women inmates at his dhyanapeetham. “There was no need to register a fresh FIR as the complaints are on the same grounds,” the officer added.

A police team from Bidadi is expected to go to Chennai and serve a notice on Lenin, so he could be summoned for recording a statement. Meanwhile, his followers are waiting for Nithyananda to return and issue a proper clarification.
