A notorious serial killer, Raghavendra, 28, claimed to be the local version of ‘Jack the Ripper’ who allegedly went on a deadly spree of killing at least 18 women, mostly hailing from Bangalore, was finally nabbed by the Tumkur district police.

The police have kept it under wraps as investigations are on, but they said most of the victims were sex workers from the city.

“Raghavendra has admitted to have been involved in killing as many as 18 women, and five bodies of his victims were found near a lake in Anchepalya near Jindal Aluminium under Madanayakanahalli police station limits in the city suburbs off Tumkur road. He was earlier arrested by RT Nagar police in connection with a murder of a woman identified as Saraswathi, a resident of Ganganagar,” said a police officer.

Saraswathi was found missing in 2010. Her relatives had filed a complaint with RT Nagar police who found her body near Anchepalya Lake. The police had arrested him from Hosanagara in Shimoga district in June 2010. The police found him involved in the murder and he was remanded in judicial custody. But he was later released on bail and he went into hiding.

RT Nagar police suspected that he was involved in many such cases wherein he befriended women before killing them, and had informed the Nelamangala police. “The RT Nagar police tipped off Nelamangala police about his suspected involvement in four more killings. He had dumped all the five bodies including that of Saraswathi near Anchepalya Lake. But they did not pursue the matter,” said a police officer.

Meanwhile, Tumkur police investigating similar cases in their limits, found the same modus operandi. They sought information from Nelamangala police and found that Raghavendra was their prime suspect.

Tumkur police, who did not reveal from where he was caught, said he was living in a village near Nelamangala when they caught him. The police claimed that after befriending the women he took them to isolated places in the city suburbs where he used to allegedly rape them before strangulating them. As the bodies were found a couple of days after the murder the ligature marks in the neck were not visible to the naked eye. In some cases, he had smashed the heads of his victims with liquor bottles.

“After killing the women he used to remove their jewellery. He had meticulously carried out his actions to escape the police,” the officer said.
