BANGALORE: The International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS) to be set up by the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) near Hesaraghatta in Bangalore will become operational in two years.

ICTS Director Spenta R Wadia said here on Saturday, "The main goals of ICTS would be to foster research, be a resource for higher education and training and reach out to the larger society by being a node for scientific information and values."

The centre would contribute critically to research excellence in areas like biological physics, computational science, complex systems, fluids and the interface between consmology, particle physics and string theory. It would also focus on emergent areas of mathematics with applications to biology and finance.

The Department of Atomic Energy, government of India, would fully fund the Rs 200 crore project, while the government of Karnataka has granted 17.35 acres of land. Request would be placed for more land if needed, Wadia said.
