Energy-saving features, like roofing with solar panels and water-recycling facilities, were some of the winning ideas from students at VisionAir, an outreach programme conducted by the Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL).

The BIAL, which has been criticised for its architecture, received many suggestions from students on incorporating design elements that would reflect the state’s heritage and culture.

Over 200 students presented 64 design models for the central space of BIAL. After two rounds of intense competition, the jury picked the designs created by students of MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology and RV College of Engineering as winners on Tuesday.
A majority of the designs submitted by the architecture students reflected the topography and culture of the state. The traditional architecture of areas like MG Road and KR Market seemed to have inspired many models.
The teams had presented their entries on December 15 and 16, last year. Both the winning teams were awarded Rs50,000 each. Vishwa S, Arjun Jaiswal and Dundu Biswana JK made up the team from MSRIT, while the RVCE team comprised Karan Shetty, Karan Singh and Prabodh Agarwal.
During the finale, team members shared with the audience the vision behind their prototypes using paper models and short films. The 3-D model by MSRIT incorporated elements from nature, like the Nandi Hills. Arjun Jayswal, a third-year student of MSRIT, said the team had revised the model numerous times. “I was extremely happy when they announced the name of our team (as the winners),” he said. “During the initial stages, the team had to work really hard. The major purpose was to give travellers a glimpse of Bangalore’s culture and tradition. To reduce the load on natural resources, energy-saving practices, like water recycling and harnessing solar energy, has been used,” he explained.
‘Air City’, by RVCE, was designed to cater to the needs of the floating population. “Our initial prototypes were inspired by the architecture and other features of old Bangalore, like the city’s several boulevards. Flexibility was also the USP of our design,” said Karan Singh from RVCE.
The evening drew to a close with the screening of short films on the key concepts by the winning teams.
