Four environment-friendly electric vehicles, including a three-wheeler, can be spotted on Bangalore roads on Saturday. The four cars, driven by Swiss nationals, are in the city as part of the World Advanced Vehicle Expedition, 2011, (WAVE-2011) organised by the Consulate General of Switzerland and the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, to promote vehicles that run on renewable energy.

The 2,700-km WAVE-2011 was flagged of in Mumbai with a stop-over at Hyderabad, Bangalore and Goa.

On Saturday, the Swiss team will demonstrate its vehicles at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) campus and interact with students.

One of the drivers, Louis Palmer, is the winner of the 2011 Champion of the Earth award of UNEP for his initiatives such as solar-taxi and zero emission races.

“It’s time to develop and implement climate-friendly solutions so that we can protect our future generations from the catastrophic impacts of climate change. The WAVE awareness drive carries this message around the world,” he said.

He added that these vehicles are ideal for Indian conditions, where there is a lot of sunshine throughout the year. “With petrol and other fossil fuels depleting, we should look for alternative solutions. This is ideal for India to become independent from petrol. Besides, these vehicles do not cause pollution and make no noise,” he added.

The road trip would cover Tumkur, Chitradurga, Ranebennur and Dharwad in the next few days.
