Corruption, today, had reached alarming proportions and it’s not hard to imagine an Egypt- or Bahrain-like situation developing in India.

That was the grim warning delivered by Lokayukta Justice Santhosh Hegde, who was speaking at a state-level convention organised by the Karnataka Janajagruthi Abhiyaana at the Bharathi Vidya Bhavan on Saturday.

“If corruption continues the way it is today, with political leaders being apathetic to the will of the people, there could be a revolution that will break out in order to bring a change in the system,” he said.

Such a revolution would be useful unless the root of corruption is removed, observed Justice Hegde. “A revolution may remove one leadership, but what is the use of it if the next leadership is also corrupt? This is being witnessed in our country where every leader is more corrupt than the previous one. Greed is the root of corruption, and this needs to be removed first,” he said.

Prof Ravivarma Kumar, senior high court advocate, said if Karnataka is the most corrupt state in the country today, it is because of the insensitivity of citizens.

“If your neighbour bought a sari for your wife, will you keep quiet about it? But when BS Yeddyurappa and other political leaders give saris to your wife, why do you remain quiet,” he asked.

On a lighter note, he said that perhaps BJP’s national leaders are hesitant to change the leadership in the state because of the ongoing election campaigns in other states.

“Perhaps the money from Karnataka is being spent for the election campaign in other states,” he joked.

Veteran freedom fighter HS Doreswamy, too, voiced his disapproval over the people’s  silence.

“Despite the Lokayukta’s efforts, despite newspapers carrying stories of scams and corruption, if Yeddyurappa and the other leaders have continued being corrupt, it is because the common man has remained silent. We have to raise our voice and hold black-flag demonstrations against Yeddyurappa and other corrupt leaders,” he said.
