The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) says it has taken steps to prevent tree fall during this monsoon.

But Srinagar residents have doubts as Palike has refused to cut a roadside tree which was perilously hanging over a house. Finally, it crashed causing damage to the building.

The residents of Srinagar Pipeline Road near Mahadeshwara temple too had complained of four roadside trees posing danger to passers-by. The stems of the trees had been eaten up by termites and they were poised to fall at any moment.

"We complained to the BBMP on May 8 about the dangerous situation. But no officer bothered to visit the place or reply to our complaint," the residents said.

On Saturday evening, amid rain and strong winds, one of the trees fell on an auto driver's sheet house. The sheets were broken and a television set kept inside the house was damaged. There was no casualty as no one was inside the house.

"There are three more trees on this stretch posing similar threat. We want the BBMP forest department to act," an exasperated resident said.

Reacting to the residents' complaints, Srinagar ward corporator T Thimmegowda said he had asked the owner of the house damaged by tree fall to give a letter to him on the damage incurred by the accident.

"I will make sure that he is compensated," he said.
He said he was receiving a lot of complaints about trees posing danger to residents.

"I have directed the forest department officials to inspect areas in the ward and cut trees which are posing danger. But there are some false complaints too. Certain people want to get rid of the healthy trees so that they get parking space for their vehicles. I have rejected such complaints," he said.
