Attempting to shift the focus of students from bookish knowledge to real world technological problems department of industries and commerce and SAP Osmosis organized a three-day sharing and innovation forum for city students.

The event, slated to take place from February 7 to 9, will have students working on a particular technological problem and finding appropriate solutions.

“The problem with the latest technology is that it is not available in textbooks, and even when we revise the books, by the time this new technology is incorporated, a newer one has cropped up. Therefore this is a way to expose students to the latest technology and learn from it,” said Maulishree, advisor to the department of industries and commerce, while addressing the press, on Wednesday.

More than 50 students nominated from colleges such as PESIT university, BMS College of Engineering and RVCE, will get to experience how a software product development company works, how to address various problems and come up with real-time solutions.

“The concept is called design thinking methodology. We communicate directly with the end consumer about issues with a particular product, based on which we create solutions,” said Vidya Sagar, software developer, SAP. It is that experience that will be given to students who will participate in the programme, according to Maulishree.

While the pilot programme is only targeted towards students from the city, plans are underway to involve students from rural areas.

“In fact, we will be taking this event to Tumkur University soon and get as many rural institutes involved as well,” she added.

This will also help students adapt to a more entrepreneurial mindset.  “We are trying to get students to turn to entrepreneurship and self employment and also provide employment to others too,” Maulishree said.
