After dazzling kite-flying enthusiasts across the world with the earliest concept of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) in Dieppe France International Kite festival early this year, India’s hobby flyers-turned-‘kite ambassadors’ will  stun the international kite flyers in Uiseong, South Korea when they assemble for the international kite festival.

Team Mangalore, will participate in the festival starting from March 31 with the biggest kite ever produced in India. The kite, titled Kathakali, is a colourful visage of a Kathakali dancer.

“The kite is entirely handcrafted with delicate appliqué work.  The beauty of this kite is that once the kite is in the air, it can hover in the sky even with very low air circulation.  The Limca Book of World Records has recorded it as the largest kite in the country. It is 965 cm tall and 335 cm in width. We have used nine colours to paint the kite. These colours are made by  natural pigments used by Kathakali dancers of Kerala,” said,  Sarvesh Rao, founder of the team.

“The reason why the kite is so stable even in low air pressure is because we have used bamboo for the spar and ripstop nylon for the tail. We have used a rare combination of locally available raw materials and internationally approved fabric for stability” he said.

Artist Dinesh Holla, a member of Team Mangalore, said, “Nine of us have put in 470 man hours to make this kite, which weighs 4 kg and 870 grams. The beauty of this kite is that it is based on the classic  dance-drama of Kerala — Kathakali. We have portrayed  a living art while kite flyers around the world use computer-aided designing and machines for productions. The instruments that  we used are a sewing machine and needles. It cost us ` 30,000”.

The team is also taking some other kites that they have already flown in various international festivals. The list includes Yakshagaana, Durga, Charlie, Owl, Gajaraja, Pushpaka Vimana, Bird, and Bharthnatyam.
