School and college students living near Sankey Tank gathered  on Sunday to stage a silent protest against BBMP’s road-widening plan.

Students from Sadashivnagar, Malleswaram, Vyalikaval and surroundings areas held placards saying “Save trees, save the planet’. The group was out on the street as early as 8.30 am on Sunday.

Civic activist Dr Meenakshi Bharath was with the students. After the demonstration, the participants joined a discussion on how traffic could be reduced, to dispense with the need for a wider road.

Some said cycling and walking could reduce traffic, while  others suggested a rapid bus corridor along other stretches,so that Sankey Road would not need to be widened.

The students’ peace march started from Sankey Park through the Sankey Tank Road and ended at Bhashyam Circle. At least 300 people including many senior citizens and members of India Against Corruption, Karnataka chapter, took an oath to curb private vehicle use on the stretch.

“This movement has brought children and youth who have the potential to bring in changes. Our fight against the atrocious behaviour of the BBMP will continue until they decide to call off the road-widening project,” said Phani Sai, a member of India Against Corruption, Karnatak chapter.
“We worked around true facts and figures and we are prepared to face the court on Tuesday. Let the BBMP bring documents which the court has asked them to and we are ready to battle it out,” Sai added.
