In yet another daring incident of burglary, a gang sneaked into a jewellery shop that is a stone’s throw from Cubbon Park police station and made away with jewellery on Sunday midnight.

The miscreants broke into Amrapali Fine Jewels, located on Kasturba Road, just 50 metres away from Cubbon Park police station. Although the jewellery shop does have CCTV cameras, they are proving to be of little help as the footage is not giving away much.

The incident came to light only at 10 am on Monday, when the jewellery showroom’s manager arrived there and lifted the shutter. Upon seeing empty shelves and realising that the store has been burgled, the manager informed Cubbon Park police. Deputy commissioner of police (Central) BR Ravikanthe Gowda and police inspector S Badrinath reached the store quickly with junior officers.

After preliminary investigation, the police said a gang of three-four persons must have committed the burglary after observing the store for about two weeks. The jewellery store is on the ground floor of five-storey building, Mithra Towers. The police said it seemed that the burglars got into the store by entering the building’s first floor from the rear side. By climbing the compound wall on the building’s rear side, one can easily climb the balcony of the first floor as the distance between the wall and the first floor is only five feet. The police said the burglars must have got on to the balcony this way and then broken open a plywood window to get into the building. A staircase on the first floor leads one to the jewellery showroom.

Although the showroom is equipped with seven CCTV cameras, the footage has failed to provide any leads to the investigators. The police said the cameras have captured only two burglars, but they cannot be identified as they had covered their faces with a black mask. One of them left his mask, made of plastic, in the balcony.

Guard was sleeping
The security guard of the jewellery store, Dondina TS, employee of i-4s Security Agency, told police that he was doing his duty at the entrance of the shop, adding that the burglars must have sneaked into it from behind. He added that he went to sleep about midnight and the incident must have happened only after that. As the showroom’s door is made of glass, the noise did not reach him. A lone security guard has been appointed to take care of Mithra Towers. The guard went to sleep before 11 pm.

The store manager told the police that she would take steps to seal the plywood window that opens next to the staircase on the first floor that leads to their store. Renovation work is under way on the building’s first floor for more than a month now. The police have taken statements of the carpenters and electricians working there.
