Steer your way from anywhere in the world

Engineering students develop remote-control technology, through which you can control your car seated anywhere. It has several applications including keeping tabs on your home when you are out of town, too.

In the future, you may be able to drive your car seated in your office; and even be able to locate your car at any instant, from anywhere in the world.

Working to make this a reality, a group of four final-year computer science engineering students from Ghousia College of Engineering have come up with a model of an ‘Internet Controlled Smart Car’ (ICSC), a device designed to improve safety, awareness and security in the future.

The ICSC is capable of broadcasting live streaming of what its camera captures, through the internet, which can be accessed by an individual from anywhere in the world. In other words, the ICSC shows the real time pictures of the location where it is installed. The ICSC can also be navigated easily through the internet within a restricted boundary, while it simultaneously broadcasts the video of what its camera is capturing.

If a diminutive model-system of the same is installed in a home, one can navigate it remotely through the internet to different rooms in the house. This means that if you are out of town, you still have a representative in the form of this remote-control system to “keep an eye” on your house.

The Big Idea
“When we had to choose our final year projects, all of us sat around; but what we had were similar ideas, which seemed quite boring,” says Ashwaq Ahmed Azeez, who has just completed his engineering from Ghousia College of Engineering. “Suddenly, my brother suggested that we try out an internet remote-controlled device which can monitor distant location in real time. The challenging idea appealed to all of us, and we decided to go ahead with it.”

He says, “We as students have always been fascinated with robots, remote   controllers, and wireless devices since the time we were schoolchildren, and had always dreamt of making something new in this field of technology.”
There have been many challenges that the group faced in the

six-month duration of their project. “Initially the car wouldn’t move at all, and later we found that there was a 15-20 second delay in the live streaming after the car started. We later realised that there was an error in the project, which we had to work hard on,” said team member, Shah Ayub Quadri. The team worked along with SK Jasimul Islam and Md Fahad Khurshid.

Who will it benefit?
The applications of ICSC range from surveillance in military, domestic or industrial environments, in the corporate environment wherein the CEO can use ICSC to be up-to-date with the office activities by actually moving it around in the office, or participating remotely in a conference or meeting. People going to office daily can keep a check on their homes from their respective offices.
It also helps to keep a watch on children if they are left alone at home. Doctors can use it remotely to monitor the condition of their patients, or managers can monitor their workers on assembly lines in factories.
