Bangalore: Bangalore's fight against cancer received more teeth with BGS Global Hospital equipping itself with PET CT Scan and Cancer Institute. Former President APJ Abdul Kalam inaugurated the new facility in the presence of chief minister BS Yeddyurappa and Jagadguru Balagangadharanatha Mahaswamiji, president of Sri Adichunchunagiri Mutt.
On the occasion Dr NK Venkataramana, Vice-Chairman, BGS Global Hospitals said, "With increasing life expectancy, more cancers are being detected across the world. There is lot of scope for research to understand the mechanism of cancer and also to formulate effective therapeutic modalities." BGS is the third hospital in the city to have established the facility.
The occasion also saw the beginning of BGS Global Utsav 2009, which is attended by over 2,000 students from various schools across the country. The hospital group also announced rebuilding 2,000 houses for the flood-hit people of North Karntaka under the state government's Ashraya scheme.
Yeddyurappa gave full credit for Ashraya to Kalam stating that it is inspired by Kalam's concept of Providing Urban Amenities to Rural Areas (PURA).
Jagadguru who prompted planting 50 million saplings in Karnataka received encomium from Kalam. He said, "Each tree will absorb 20 kg of carbon dioxide and generate 12 kg of oxygen."
