Shunned by his own community for refusing to marry off his 13-year-old daughter to the man who raped her, Syed Karim got to know the extent of his community’s hostility towards him when he was stabbed on Sunday.

Karim,54, a resident of Ramachandrapura, was attacked by six men on Sunday evening in front of his house while he was returning from work.

Karim, while in Victoria Hospital, told police that three men sneaked on him and stabbed him in the back and once in the chest, while another person hit him on the head with a metal object. Karim, who sustained serious injuries, was rushed to Victoria Hospital by neighbours and family members.

Karim’s life took a turn for the worse when he discovered that his daughter, a minor, was pregnant. His assistant allegedly had raped his daughter while she was alone in the house.

While the family rallied behind their daughter and helped her deliver the baby, Karim, much to his disbelief, was asked by his community members to marry off his daughter to his assistant.

A shaken Karim showed remarkable grit in standing up to his community’s diktats with regard to his daughter, which only resulted in further isolation for his family. Even his daughter was asked to stop attending school, as she was pregnant out of wedlock.

But as the incident on Sunday evening shows, his community is not ready to forgive him for opposing their views.

The attackers, it seems, were well-known to police and Karim himself, as he had filed many complaints with Srirampuram police against the attackers.

“He even filed a complaint before court and commissioner of police Jyothiprakash Mirji,” said advocate GD Srinivas. Police had deployed two policemen for Karim’s security but the threats did not stop. On August 24, Karim filed another complaint.

“A week ago police told Karim to leave Bangalore. When he refused, they told him not to step out of the house. There were no policemen when the attack happened,” Srinivas said. A family member said they had even received a threatening SMS. Ultimately, Karim’s refusal to marry his daughter to the accused made him the target.

Strangely, police have blamed Karim for inviting the attack. According to a police officer, Karim had been filing complaints on many people, which the officer said would have provoked them into attacking Karim. But when questioned about the missing policemen deployed for Karim’s security, the officer refused to comment.

Deputy commissioner of police (north) HS Revanna said, “We have registered an attempt to murder case and are investigating. The culprits are still at large.”

Karim’s condition is currently stable. The attack has neither dented his resolve to oppose his community’s unjust diktats or educate his daughter.
