Evaluation of answer scripts of the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) 2010 examinations has been facing roadblocks since Day 1.
The evaluation work started on April 15 with some teachers staging a protest demanding a hike in remuneration.
When issues seemed to be settling down, officials of the Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board (KSEEB) realised there was a daily absenteeism of nearly 30% evaluators as they were deputed for census and gram panchayat election work.
The KSEEB had appointed 40,000 high school teachers for evaluation, aiming to complete the process by April 24 and declare results by May 20. But the absenteeism of evaluators is likely to delay the process.
“Everyday, we are facing about 30% absenteeism of evaluators as many teachers have been deputed for census work and for the upcoming gram panchayat elections,” said MN Baig, director, KSEEB.
Board officials said they primarily needed the presence of all evaluators of English and Science papers as there were a large number of repeaters. They said they could manage with the available staff for the remaining subjects.
“KSEEB had appointed me for SSLC evaluation work. Soon after, I received a government order to attend census work as well. I cannot avoid either of the tasks,” Shashikala MS, a high school teacher, said.
“We cannot blame evaluators for the delay. Also, we cannot expect them to evaluate more than 12 papers a day just to stick to our schedule. We may extend evaluation work for a few more days,” Baig said.
