South Zone Motor Transporters Welfare Association (SZMTWA) on Saturday decided to go on a strike throughout South India from June 15 midnight to protest against the imposition of toll on vehicles and hike in prices of diesel.

“The government had agreed to three demands related to the toll issue during the meeting held in December 2010, but the implementation them is not effective at the ground level. Apart from the agreed toll issues, there are various pending issues that need to be addressed and have been delayed,” said GR Shanmugappa, general secretary, SZMTWA.

Addressing the media on Saturday, he said the collection became a daily affair as toll was ¤80 lakh before the hike. After the hike, it went up to ¤140 lakh per day.

The government also promised that it would implement provision of the notification dated January 12 at all toll plazas, both under the old and new rules, but nothing has been done so far, said Shanmugappa.

He said truckers and transporters were facing many problems due to lack of clarity at toll plazas.

South Zone Motor Transporters Welfare Association met in Bangalore on Saturday to decide on the protest against toll tax, he said.

“The road transport industry, which does not have an industrial status and is the main target of change in rules, is one of the worst affected due to the ever-increasing adversities from all quarters.

This industry continues to suffer on all accounts and the government’s lackadaisical and callous approach to the long-pending issues has created resentment among the members.

Diesel price hike is a very sensitive issue not only to the road transport industry but also to the common man. A deep hike in diesel price will result in enormous loss to the industry,” he said.

Shanmugappa said the road transport industry was suffering a huge loss due to the unilateral hike of TPP.
