The body of CRPF jawan Sathish of Alambadi village, killed by Hizb terrorists in Srinagar, was laid to rest with state honours.

The state honours followed after the family members paid their last respects and the last rites were performed as per the Shaiva faith. His brother Harish, also serving the CRPF, in Bhopal, was flown to Bangalore by the government. As Sathish was not married, his final rites were performed by Harish.

This was the first funeral given to a jawan of the CRPF in Mandya. It was witnessed by thousands of people arriving from all over the district and the neighbouring Mysore and Ramanagaram districts. His mother Savithramma, despite the great loss, was composed at the funeral and said her heroic son would not want to see her cry. Harish and his uncle Anand consoled the other relatives who had come from different places.

The funeral was preceded by a procession of the Sathish’s body, carried in a decorated army truck, through the KR Pete town to his village Alambadi. Earlier, a group of CRPF jawans and officials brought the body from BIAL airport to KR Pete.

Since the funeral had to be completed within 46 hours of the death, according to the family instructions, the body could not be kept for display for more than one hour. According to a rough estimate, more than 10,000 people paid their last respect to the slain solider. The final rites were administered by the family elders at 1.15 pm in Alambadi village at the private fields of the family.

The cortege made many stops on the way from KR Pete to Alambadi as people had gathered in large number all along the way and hundreds of people laid wreaths and showered flowers on the body. It made stops at Hosaholalu, Kattarghatta, Hariharapura, Tendekere and Akkihebbalu. People who paid last respects included religious persons from various faiths, common people, students, officials and elected representatives of the various village panchayats and district officials.

Anand said Sathish had promised to return home for a short holiday, during which the family wanted to get him married.
