Of the seven students and the attender who were referred to Hosmat on Friday, six have sustained “grievous injuries”, say hospital authorities.

Dr Ajith Benedict Rayan, vice-president (medical administration), Hosmat, said the six injured persons need to be under observation. Four of them have been admitted to the intensive care unit and are under observation for the next two days. He added that as most of them have sustained fractures, their injuries will take time to heal.

The attender, Rathnamma, has sustained injury in the left leg with fracture of right shin and knee-joint. Besides her, students Dilip, Ajay and Bharadwaj have undergone surgery. Dilip has an abdominal injury and shin-bone fracture. Ajay has suffered dislocation of the right hip and a fracture on left thighbone.

Bharadwaj has an abdominal spleen injury. Shivaraj’s jaw is fractured and he is under observation for two days for surgery. Suresh has survived a head injury with cervical sprain. He, too, is under observation. Bharath was referred to the hospital with fractured wrist; he was discharged on Friday.

Anand KT, whose daughter was on the bus that met with accident but was lucky not to sustain an injury, said the school could not be held responsible for the driver’s mistake. He said these things are unforeseen and might have happened to his daughter too.

Meanwhile, Dilip’s aunt said the boy’s mother was frightened since she learnt about the incident. “How can the school authorities be so irresponsible! The doctors are not telling us anything clearly,” he said.

Balakrishna, uncle of Suresh, said the accident has compounded the problems of their family. He said Suresh’s father is ill and his wife is taking care of him. “How do we react to such an incident! We are hoping that our child comes back home safe.”
