Though the Gandhi Krishi Vignana Kendra (GKVK) road construction case is pending in the court, the work on that stretch is going on in full swing. Residents of Vidyaranyapura have now joined with farmers and agriculture students to strengthen the protest against the road construction.

“Farmers are already a marginalised group. Now, this road is breaching the rights of researchers and students of agricultural science,” said Siddarth Prabhakar, an undergraduate at the GKVK. Over 200-odd students, farmers and residents have come together to voice their concern against the ongoing road construction on the campus.

The protesters marched in silence to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) office in Bytranpura and they presented the joint commissioner a letter on Thursday. The letter stated that BBMP should stop work as the verdict on the public interest litigation case filed by concerned residents was still pending in the court.

“This campus is conducting research to help farmers. Its
environment should not be spoilt by allowing a road inside the campus,” said Kurubur Shanthakumar, chief convener, federation for state farmer’s organisation.

Residents have been opposing the construction of the road ever since work started in April last year. Students also said that the “mindless axing of trees” was not development. “We cannot neglect our bio-diversity to infrastructural growth. That too, when we are facing issues related to food security,” said Prabhakar. Representing the student community he said, “We need our fields. Otherwise, human population may shirk to mere numbers. This road is a real concern.”
