The continued rain fury has claimed 13 lives in the last four days across the state. The heavy rains have also thrown life out of gear in northern and coastal regions of the state.

Heavy rains have inundated huge swathes of land in Bidar, Gulbarga, Belgaum, Koppal, Raichur, Bellary, Davangere, Bijapur and Gadag districts.  “In the last four days, heavy rains have caused extensive damage to life and property in the state,” a senior revenue department official said.

Rains have washed away crops, and in many districts, villages were submerged in knee-high water. The death count has touched 13 and over 50 people have been injured. Over 30 cattle, too, have died, 3,269 houses damaged and crops on 16,611 hectares of land destroyed.

Roads, bridges and other infrastructure have suffered damages worth Rs91 crore, according to preliminary estimates. Rivers Tungabhadra, Bheema and Doni are overflowing. Discharge from the Tungabhadra dam has been raised to 80,000 cusecs, which has led to flooding in downstream villages. This has submerged over 1,000 houses. Similarly, heavy discharge from Hirehalla reservoir has submerged the Gadag-Yalaburga road and damaged several bridges, bringing traffic to a halt.

The revenue department has taken all precautionary measures, officials claimed. Revenue minister Karunakara Reddy himself is visiting the rain-affected areas and directing officials to provide immediate relief to the flood victims. The minister has directed deputy commissioners of all districts to take up relief and rehabilitation works on a war footing. The deputy commissioners already have funds of Rs250 crore. In addition, the state government on Thursday released Rs8 crore for flood relief.

Chief minister BS Yeddyurappa has said that there was no crunch of funds to take up relief works. He said he would personally visit some of the flood-affected areas to supervise relief works.
