Shed self-doubt to succeed, women told

All women at some stage in their careers face the dilemma of prioritising home vis a vis their professional lives. However, the key is to maintain a balance between the two by exercising the power of ‘and’ and not ‘or’.

When you put a group of successful women in a room, the energy is almost contagious. To channel this energy towards career advancement of the new-generation women, Sara Mathew, chairman and CEO of Dun and Bradstreet Corp, launched the first series of ‘Dare to lead’ conferences in Mumbai and Bangalore.

The round table aimed to create a platform for women leaders to share their knowledge and experiences on key issues impacting women in Indian business. The business leaders shared anecdotes and tips with their audience on what it takes to be successful in the corporate world.

“I believe sharing stories of our own successes and failures from our personal and professional journey is a powerful way to learn from each other,” said Mathew.

Providing an insight into where women falter, Kirthiga Reddy, head and director online operations, Facebook India, said women  underestimated themselves at various levels.

 “Self-doubt acts as a major deterrent towards achieving what we are capable of. We should take a step back and think of how we can change to reach our goal,” Reddy said.

Being able to lead and learn without being intimidated was identified as a key area that needed improvisation.

 “I did not put my career on the back burner when my daughter was born. Instead, I took a stand and decided to take my 4-month-old child everywhere I went, whether it was travelling or to meetings, so that neither was compromised,” she said.

With more support available domestically, women should find a way of leveraging it to their best advantage.  The panelists stressed the need for networking for career advancement.

“Networking is very important for corporate growth. But due to the nature of these events, such as cocktail parties etc, women don’t do as well in this as men might,” said Archana Hingorani, CEO and executive director of IL&FS Investment Managers Limited.
