It were three sanitary pits—made where they should not have been made—that did the building at Electronics City in, literally.

A five-storey under-construction building at Vinayaka Layout, Electronics City, is leaning towards its left after its two foundation pillars sank five feet on Tuesday at 5 am. After the work to demolish the building started, it turned out that the sanitary pits were the root cause of the incident.

Rules flouted
Anekal taluk executive official Veerabadrappa said they found that three building owners (of the tilted building and the ones on its left and rear) had constructed a sanitary pit each under the road.

He said that because of the pits—each four-feet wide, 10-feet long and five-feet deep—the soil became loose and the under-construction building’s pillars sank. He added that as per the rules, each building’s sanitary pit should be on its premises, not outside it.

Work on dismantling the leaning building continued on Wednesday. Veerabadrappa said the walls of second and third floors were demolished and they tried to pull down the building using ropes, but the ropes snapped.

He said they would turn the building into a skeleton of pillars and iron rods and then bring it down.

As the drilling machine could reach only the third floor of the building, mud was dug up from a nearby vacant site and dumped in front of the building to the height of 20 feet, thus enabling the drilling machine reach the fourth and fifth floors. The demolition work is expected to last another two days. Even as the authorities are trying to cause no harm to the neighbouring structures, owners and residents of nearby buildings are holding their breath.

Brajesh, who owns the building on the left of the leaning building, said he was just praying to the God for safety of his building.

Vijay Kumar, the owner of the illegal building that is leaning, is still absconding. A case has been registered against him at Parappana Agrahara police station.
