Clinical trials are a necessity today for medical science to progress. However, the need of the hour is to ensure safe clinical trials, said Ghulam Nabi Azad, union minister for health and family welfare.
“There are certain procedures for clinical trial and the apex body needs to be 100% sure that all these procedures are followed step-by-step. Even the drug controller general of India sees to it that the procedure is followed properly,” said Azad.
“India is one of the prominent countries in the pharma sector, with over 200 countries using our products and around 150 countries using our vaccines. Thus, our pharma research needs to be extremely well and clinical trials people friendly,” he added.
Focusing on the demand of public-private partnership in the tertiary healthcare sector, he said: “Vaccination for children is funded entirely by the health ministry. For the first time, we have
introduced a tracking system on the number of children being vaccinated and are not going to accept any figure given by the state governments. We now maintain a database on the name, address and telephone number of the children vaccinated.”
“The health department has also launched a pilot project about three months ago across 100 districts in 21 states involving a population of 150 million to 200 million for early-detection test of cancer and diabetes. Medical colleges can also pitch in here to help this programme,” said Azad.
