In a rural, rustic style, chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda quenched his thirst by drinking directly from a tap installed in a village in Nanjangud taluk. Gowda inaugurated the drinking water scheme at Chinnadawadi village, Kavalande hobli of Nanjangud taluk in Mysore on Sunday.

When one of the officials cautioned him against drinking the water, Gowda shot back, “You call it drinking water scheme, don’t you? So why should not I drink from it? I am sure people of this village will also do so, so why not I?”

The drinking water scheme from the Kabini river has been executed at a cost of Rs20 crore. “This scheme will feed 53 villages with drinking water and I was the first beneficiary of it,” he said with his characteristic wide grin.

Later, speaking in Mandakalli airport, Gowda said: “The government had identified 93 taluks as drought prone and full-scale relief operations are on in those taluks. Drinking water programmes, animal fodder and civil supplies have been taken up on priority basis.”

“Each taluk will get Rs2 crore for tackling drought. Money will be released once the deputy commissioners spend that money and give me the report,” he added.

Farmers block CM’s entourage
Sugarcane farmers of Mysore stopped Gowda’s entourage near Koodanahalli in Nanjangud taluk.

They appealed to him to announce support price for sugarcane as sugar factories were not giving the right price for their produce.
