Rwandan students based in Bangalore took out a peace march in the city on Sunday to highlight the message that an incident like the 1994 genocide in that country should never be repeated. About 400 students took part in the march. Mohan Suresh, honorary counsel for Rwanda in Bangalore, said their motto was “Never again.” He said the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis was not condemned by the United Nations even until two years after the incident.

The march, called Walk2Remember, saw the participation of Indian students and Sri Lankan students too. Suresh said the UN had declared that April 7 would be the day to honour the victims of the genocide. Similar peace walks were held in Punjab, Coimbatore and other parts of the country.

The march in Bangalore ended with a programme that was attended by Bangalore University vice-chancellor, N Prabhu Dev and Williams Nkurunziza, Rwandan high commissioner.

“In over 100 days, the genocide in 1994 claimed over a million lives. The country has come a long way since then and made an enormous progress. We should learn from history to make sure our future remains bright,” said Nkurunziza.

The programme also featured video testimonials from a few survivors of the genocide. The screening left many in the audience visibly shaken and moved. “The future of Rwanda lies in the hands of the students and everyone from all countries from the world should do everything they can to make sure this never happens again. We need to remember and honour the victims,” said Prabhu Dev. The programme also featured a video message from Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary-general.

The Rwandan High Commission in Delhi organised the march here in collaboration with Bangalore University.
