One of the most sought-after private professional colleges in the state has been alleged of discriminating between students who got admission to undergraduate courses after clearing CET conducted by Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) and those who got admission in the management quota.

RV College of Engineering (RVCE), which is preferred by students who cleared CET, has allegedly discriminated against students who secured seats in the collage in the government quota while allotting the hostel facility.

According to students who have been denied the hostel facility, the college is seeking vengeance as they raised the issue of excess fee. “We took the issue of excess fee demanded by the college to the higher education department and KEA. Now the collage is taking revenge by refusing to allot us seats in the college hostel,” said Sumana (name changed) who got a seat in RVCE but was denied the hostel facility.

“I am not from Bangalore and I do not have any relatives in the city. I opted for Computer Science in RVCE and was expecting to get accommodation at the college hostel. But I was surprised to hear that hostel seats will not be available for those who got admission under the government quota,” said Krupa, another student.

These students tried to bring the issue to the notice of the state higher education department, but the department officials refused to intervene, saying providing hostel facilities at private colleges does not come under their purview.

“Providing hostel facility is up to the respective collage management and the department cannot intervene in this. When the colleges demanded excess fee from students, we warned them of serious action and solved the problem. They need to solve the hostel issue themselves,” said a higher education department official.

According to the college management, when it comes to hostel accommodation, preference is given to students who got admission in the management quota and through COMED-K.
RVCE president MK Panduranga Shetty said: “We allot seats in the hostel on a first-come-first-served basis. Usually management students approach us for admission first. Therefore, hostel facility is also offered to them before others can avail it.”

According to Shetty, those who cleared CET and got admission in the government quota are given the last preference while allotting hostel facility as they come to the college towards the end of the admission process.

“By the time CET students approach us, we hardly have any seat in the hostel. It is not intentional. I agree that we refuse seats to local students as much as possible, because we give preference to students from outside Bangalore,” he said.

“We have limited seats in the hostel and seats have to be allotted for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. In the boys’ hostel, we have accommodated three students in a room. Hope you understand the problem,” Shetty said.
