It was like any other evening for 57-year-old Channakeshava DC. He had, as usual, visited his property on Rukmininagar main road; met people in the building premises and was returning to his home in HMT Layout along with his friends. But things were about to change.

Around 8.45pm, when he had reached Nelagadaranahalli main road in Peenya, his car hit a motorcycle. The three youths, who were travelling on the bike, had a heated exchange with Channakeshava. As both parties quarrelled, one of the motorcycle riders stabbed Channakeshava; then the three fled.

This shocking incident of road rage occurred in front of several onlookers on Sunday.

According to Channakeshava’s son Vijay Kumar, his father had been visiting their building regularly. “He used to meet his friends at the building premises and return home by 9 pm,” he said.
Inspector Mallikarjuna said the argument between the two started over the damage caused to the bike. The angry youths, said Mallikarjuna, first broke the glasses of the car with stones. This, naturally, angered Channakeshava and he started warning and abusing the three.

As tempers flared, one among the three stabbed Channakeshava with a knife.  “Then the three escaped from the spot before the public could gather,” said Mallikarjuna. The inspector said that there was no power supply in the area at that time.

As a bleeding Channakeshava screamed for help, his friends —Gangadhar and Thimmaiah—came to his rescue.

Channakeshava was taken to Sarojini hospital in T Dasarahalli. “The doctors at the hospital refused to admit Channakeshava,” said Mallikarjuna. “Then he was shifted to Sanjeevini hospital in Duglamma temple street, Peenya, where the doctors declared him brought dead,” said the inspector.  Police said that there were many witnesses, including a tea shop owner, to the incident. All the youths were aged between 25-28 years, he added.
