The government’s road-widening plan has put many heritage properties under threat creating several poignant stories.

However, residents of Whitefield seem to be unfazed by the development as they try to chart out a plan aimed at saving the locality’s heritage.

The concerned citizens have constituted a small group comprising Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), Save Whitefield and technical experts, to stop the indiscriminate loss due to the road-widening plan. At a meeting held on Thursday the group was unanimous in its opinion that chalking out a definite heritage management plan was one sure way of retaining the charm of Whitefield.

The Bangalore Chapter of INTACH, in partnership with residents of Whitefield, organised the meeting. A variety of ideas came up in the meeting.

RK Mishra, a resident, stressed the importance of collective action to ensure that Whitefield’s heritage remained unharmed. Mishra proposed the highlighting of heritage properties through signages, trails and maps. He added that a meeting with BBMP officials could be arranged if the committee came up with a definite solution to the road-widening plan so that heritage sites like the Whitfield Memorial Church need not be demolised for road-widening .

The residents vehemently opposed unplanned development. They were of the view that the road-widening plan was carried out in an ad hoc manner.

“Make the people of Whitefield love the place. They need to learn more about the locality they live in. They will automatically come forward to save the heritage. The residents are not aware of the fact that Whitefield is a very well planned utopia,” said Jaffar Khan, an architect.
