Renowned photographer MY Ghorpade dies at 80

Ghorpade was elected to the assembly in 1959 from Sandur, and to the Lok Sabha in 1962, 1967 and 1972, from the same constituency.

Veteran politician and industrialist, Murarirao Yeshwanthrao Ghorpade, died on Saturday at Mahveer Jain Hospital in Bangalore. He was 80 years old. Ghorpade was elected to the assembly in 1959 from Sandur, and to the Lok Sabha in 1962, 1967 and 1972, from the same constituency. In 1954, he joined the Congress and concentrated on rural development. He was also the founder of Sandur Manganese Iron Ore Limited.

Ghorpade’s friends and relatives gathered at the hospital on Saturday and the body was later shifted to his house at RMV 2nd Stage. Chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda and other ministers paid their respects to Ghorpade on Saturday. The body will be taken to Sandur on Sunday and the funeral will be held on Monday.

Ghorpade was known for his generosity and love for photography. He was awarded the fellowship of Royal Photographic Society of Britain and Excellence federation International De L’Art Photographic in 1976.

In 1983, he was the first wildlife photographer to win the International Master Photographer award from Master Federation International De L’Art Photographic. In 1985, he received the Karnataka Rajyotsava award and Lalit Kala Akademi award for photography in 1994. He also wrote books such as Sunlight and Shadows in 1983, Development Ethos and Experience, The Grand Resistance and Paramacharya of Kanchi.

He was Karnataka’s finance minister from 1972-79. During SM Krishna’s tenure as CM, he served as rural development and panchayat raj minister. He then retired from politics. Ghorpade was due to return to Sandur next week. He developed chest pain on Saturday and his family rushed him to hospital. He died due to a cardiac arrest at 2.45pm. He has three sons, a daughter and six grandchildren.
