The police arrested 29-year-old Arun Kumar for allegedly murdering 20-year-old Roopa. The girl, a BBM student, was found dead in the kitchen of her house on 5th Main Road in Kamakshipalya on Wednesday.

Police said the accused, Roopa’s cousin Arun (in pic, left), had strangulated her for the money that was in the house, as he wanted to pay off his debts.

Arun told the police that he hadn’t meant to kill Roopa but render her unconscious. Police said that the motive of the murder was to lay his hands on Rs60,000 that Roopa had in the house.

Arun was working as a realtor since four years and had taken a loan of Rs15 lakh. Police said that his business did not pay off and the pressure to repay the loan had led him to look for ways to make some quick buck.

A resident of Doddabidarakallu, Arun was living along with his wife and parents. His aunt had come to visit his mother and the both were having a casual conversation when he overheard about the money kept  in Roopa’s house. With the plan to steal the money, on Wednesday, Arun had gone to Roopa’s house and waited outside till her husband Hanumantha Gowda had left home. Around 11 am, he took the opportunity to steal in. He then found Roopa in the kitchen and strangulated her and fled with the money.

The incident came to light when Roopa’s husband returned in the evening.

Inspector of police, NH Ramachandraiah, who was investigating the case, said that while Roopa’s husband was the suspect at first, further investigations had led them to Arun.

Police used cell tower tracking and found that Arun was near Kamakshipalaya on the day of the murder. On interrogation, he confessed to the crime.
