Nearly 15 girls, thought to be minors, were rescued by the railway police and a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in a joint operation on Tuesday. The railway police claimed that the girls had arrived from Srikakulam district in Andhra Pradesh.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that they were brought here by a garment factory,” said railway superintendent of police DC Rajappa. He said the girls were intercepted on a tip-off after they arrived at the Bangalore East railway station on Tuesday morning.
“They had come by the Prashanthi Express,” Jnanaprakash, a coordinator of Childline, said. “The police saw the girls stranded at the railway station. We have found the vehicles that had come to take them to the factory.The girls were handed over to Childline. Itwill produce them before the child welfare committee. The girls will be kept in the custody of committee till the investigations are over,” he said.The police said the girls, most of them speaking Oriya, were offered Rs3,200 as monthly salary of which Rs1,500 was to be cut to meet the expenses on their boarding.
