Rachenahalli, situated about five km from Outer Ring Road near Hebbal, is in the limelight, thanks to the opposition revelations on the denotification scam that allegedly benefited BY Raghavendra, son of chief minister BS Yeddyurappa.

Rachenahalli was a typical village till 2003; villagers relied on agriculture and horticulture for their livelihood. Things changed when the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) issued a notice for the acquisition of the village land for Arkavathy Layout.

The acquisition of land for Arkavathy  Layout, changed the lives of the villagers forever. Most villagers are now no longer associated with agriculture; they work as daily wage labourers. “We were happy cultivating ragi, rice and vegetables. We stopped cultivation after our land was acquired for the Arkavathy Layout. Now, most villagers are daily wage labourers,” said Hanumantharayappa, a 50-year-old villager.

The villagers did receive compensation for their land. A few farmers, who lost their land to various government projects including Manyata Tech Park, Bangalore’s first multi-dimensional IT park, bought some agricultural land in nearby places. Some even built houses and offered them on rent.

The rest, however, spent the money without proper planning. Now, they work as daily wage labourers in the IT park.

Another villager, Rajanna, alleged that some influential people were able to denotify their lands by bribing officials and politicians.

“Now that the denotification scam has been exposed, poor farmers should get justice after the government takes action against the guilty,” he said.
