Bangalore: Research and Development organisations must expedite development of indigenous technology to increase self-reliance in all areas especially the defence sector, Air Marshal PK Barbara, vice chief of the Air Staff, said.

"The secondary applications, which are the offshoot of main technology, has resulted in helping the various industries to manufacture many equipment and accessories in a big way", he said at the golden jubilee celebrations of Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) here today.

He expressed hope that the Kaveri engine will become a reality and power the country's indigenous fighter aircraft-- Tejas, Light Combat Aircraft.

Kaveri Engine has a low-bypass-ratio after GTRE, a lab under Defence Research and Development Organisation, helped developing the burning turbo fan.

Air vice marshal (Retd) Roy Choudhary, founder director of GTRE was honoured with the "Lifetime Achievement Award" on the occasion.

GTRE has organised an educative exhibition at the premises to mark the celebrations.
