An altercation over bikes parked on the road in the middle of the night sent tempers soaring near Avenue Road in Chickpet police stations limits on Sunday.

It ended in two car-borne brothers opening fire in the air and assaulting a group of four youths, leaving one of them badly injured.

The brothers, Venkatesh Rao and Ganesh Rao, were later arrested by the police.

The incident took place around 11.30 pm near a public toilet on Hospital Road, linking BVK Iyengar Road and Avenue Road. Both the groups were allegedly in an inebriated condition at the time of the incident.

Rajesh Singh, 31, of Megarpet suffered injuries in his left leg after he was hit with a stick by one of the brothers.

Singh and his friends, Shylendra, Santosh, Dharam Singh, were returning home after celebrating Holi in a bar. They stopped their bikes near a public toilet to attend to nature’s call.

At the same time, the brothers, Venkatesh Rao and Ganesh Rao, came in their car and asked Singh and his friends to park their bikes on the other side so that they could park their vehicle.

However, Singh reportedly told them to park the car on the empty road, sparking off a verbal duel between the two groups.

Venkatesh got down from the car and started hitting Singh with a stick, leaving him with an injury in a leg. When Singh started abusing him, an angry Ganesh, who was in the driver’s seat, got down and opened two rounds of fire in the air from his licensed .32 revolver. The injured Singh alerted the Chickpet police, who rushed to the spot and picked up the brothers.

Singh was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. He later lodged a complaint with the police against the brothers.

The brothers reportedly threatened the police, saying they knew several political leaders, including Congress leader DK Shivakumar.

They also said that the police could not do anything to them. The police have registered an attempt to murder case against the brothers and voluntarily causing hurt under the Indian Penal Code and the Provision of Arms Act and arrested them.

“The incident happened under the influence of alcohol. We have registered a case and arrested them. We have also seized their revolver,” additional commissioner of police (law and order) T Sunil Kumar said.

The police also said that the victim and the accused stayed in the same locality, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Ulsoor Gate police station. The brothers and Singh are automobile spare parts dealers on JC Road and Chickpet.
