An investigation into the shooting that occurred in the wee hours of March 16 at the Byalalu unit of the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) revealed that there was no firing from intruders. Ballistic experts submitted a report to state police confirming that there was no firing from outside.

The report was submitted after a two-day examination of the site revealed that  there was no evidence to support the claims of the security guard on duty at the time.

After news of the firing spread, the incident was understood to be an indicator of the vulnerability of sensitive installations to terror attacks. Isro’s Byalalu unit looks after the deep space network for the Chandrayaan moon mission.

The report submitted to the state police stated that no residue of gunpowder was found at the site. The empty cartridges recovered from the site all belonged the service rifle of the security guard. The security guard on duty at the time, Jadhav Varun Bhagavan, had said that two rounds had been fired by two people who were moving around suspiciously. Earlier, Bhagavan had claimed that he was fired upon as he tried to ascertain the identity of the two intruders.

Experts opined that no bullet marks were found on the periphery wall at the position where the sentry was posted. Hours after the incident, officers of the CISF had dismissed the guard’s claims. Additional director general of police (law and order) AR Infant had said that the guard might have been in a state of ‘hallucination’.
The report stated, “Ballistic experts scanned the entire area … The two-day exercise did not yield any results to show that there was firing by anyone from outside the Isro unit. We have found only empty cartridges of shots fired by the security guard from his INFAS service rifle.”
