The Round Table India (RTI), on Friday, honoured men and women whose contributions have made Karnataka proud. On the occasion of Basava Jayanthi, the organisation presented five of them with Pride of Karnataka awards.

While lok ayukta Justice N Santosh Hegde was conferred the prestige for governance, Captain GR Gopinath got it for entrepreneurship and management development.

Hanumathappa Sudharshan was awarded for his contribution in societal development and tribal welfare. Padma Shri awardee Pankaj Advani was honoured for being the only billiards champion from India, at 25. The RTI also conferred Nicole Faria with the award for putting India back on the beauty map by winning Miss Earth crown in 2010.

Sudharshan said, “I believe in the joy of giving and being satisfied by bringing up the tribals and working for the society. Today, the Soligas in BR Hills have got their land titles and many tribal children go to reputed universities. Serving people makes me happy even though I do not have a bank balance.”

Captain Gopinath praised the entrepreneurs who are members of the RTI and said that entrepreneurs should speak up against issues which affect the society and nation. “Entrepreneurs are called upon to be the drivers of development in this modern age. As entrepreneurs, we should keep asking ourselves how much we have done for the society and look beyond making business.”

Thanking the organisation, award recipient  Advani said, “The RTI has done a phenomenal work for the under-privileged children in giving them education. I would support them. I  also want to thank this city for having supported me to hone my skills in such an unconventional sport.”

Beauty queen Faria said she would support the RTI in getting children educated as she believed that education alone can eradicate poverty. She is currently working for lake rejuvenation in Bangalore.

This time, Justice N Santosh Hegde stayed clear of commenting on his usual topic of interest — corruption — and urged the youth to do something inspirational for the society. “Societal values have fallen in the country which inherits great ethics and social values. Education can bring back the lost glory and hence we all should do something inspirational,” said Hegde.

Taking off on another plane, Hegde further commented on the committee formed by the Supreme Court in the illegal mining case. He said, “All the 19 companies were not given a hearing by the SC and were asked to close down. Now the committee formed by the Supreme Court on this matter will hear their cases and take the case forward.” However, he ducked all questions on
the rampant corruption in the state.
