Even as the Supreme Court resumes hearing into the illegal mining case on Thursday, the state Cabinet, which is scheduled to meet later in the evening, is expected to take a few more tough decisions to send a strong signal that it is willing to put an end to illegal mining in the state.

According to sources, the meeting, scheduled at 5.30pm, is a well thought out decision.

The Cabinet will take note of the proceedings in the SC and then announce appropriate actions to further convey the state’s commitment to implement the Central Empowered Committee report.

Sources also said that the state government was thinking of suspending around 15 IAS, IPS and IFS officers indicted in the CEC report for their alleged dereliction of duty in preventing illegal mining.

The state government may also order 16 companies named in the CEC report to suspend their mining operations for allegedly engaging in illegal mining in the state.

State to file report before SC
The state government’s exhaustive 1,000-page report on illegal mining in Karnataka will be submitted before the Supreme Court on Thursday.

The report will reiterate the state’s commitment to curb illegal mining and its willingness to impose a blanket ban on mining in forest areas.

Law and parliamentary affairs minister S Suresh Kumar said, “The state has prepared the detailed report after discussions with officials and legal experts. In the report, we have explained the steps taken by the state government to curb illegal mining. We have given details about illegal mining from 2003 to 2010. We have also explained the steps we are going to take in the future,” said the minister.
