The state Pre-University Education (PUE) department is in trouble again. Many lecturers who have been assigned examination duty for the second PU board exams have also been deputed for election duty for the upcoming BBMP elections in Bangalore.

The second PU exams are slated for March 18and will conclude by March 31. The BBMP election will be held on March 28.

Lecturers who have been deputed for election duty are expected tojoin on March 27 and will be relieved only on March 28 evening.
The PUE department will be in a fix, if there are not enough lecturers to conduct the second year PUC examinations. Now lecturers are unsure about what needs to be done because they can’t afford to miss either of these duties. “If we don’t attend election duty, then we will have to face a criminal case. If we are absent for examination duty, the department will take disciplinary action against us,” said one lecturer from the Government PU College, Malleshwaram 18th cross.

This college is one of the biggest examination centres in the city. Nearly 18 lecturers from here have been marked for election duty and assigned examination duty as well.

“In our college, almost all lecturers have got election duty. The department officials are asking us to manage with the existing staff. But it not easy because ours is one of the biggest centres and we want to conduct the exam without any issues cropping up,” said a college official, expressing dismay.

Even the PUE department officials are aware about the problem. Many principals are approaching the department to seek a solution. “There are problems related to examination duty. We have received many complaints from college principals in this regard,” said an official from the PUE department.

Reacting to this, D Karunakaran, joint director (examinations), told dna.sunday, “We have enquired with both the north and south deputy directors. As per our information, at least six colleges are facing this problem.”

“We have already brought this to the notice of the district commissioner (DC). He asked the concerned deputy directors to send the list of colleges which have this problem. We hope it will be solved and if not, we will come up with some other alternative,” Karunakaran added.

“Even the election commissioner knew this.He said that those who have to attend both the duties can join election duty by 12pm after finishing their examination duty,” he added.
