Besides summer heat and water shortage, residents are also facing long power cuts over the last two weeks. On Sunday afternoon, a technical glitch at Somanahalli sub station resulted in a power outage in most parts of the city. Supply was restored only at 6 am on Monday.

Many parts of the city are seeing such outages almost every day leaving people frustrated and angry.

“We only get weekends to stay at home and relax. With outages, we are forced to go to theatres or malls as they have backup generators. We cannot enjoy a peaceful weekend at home now,” said Chatrapati Umesh, a software engineer living in Austin Town. Some say their quality family time is being disrupted due to power cuts. Students are not able to study.

“CET is fast approaching and we are unable to study. If power is shut down in the evenings, it is hard to study and we end up scoring less,” said Saraswathi Bennur, a second year PUC student.

Four units of Raichur Thermal Power Station have gone offline leaving a yawning void in power supply to the city. While the city is already reeling under intermittent outages, an added 300 megawatt shortage will aggravate the problem.

While the state’s power consumption stands at 50.48 million units, the city is consuming about 73.99 million units per day. Although there are regular outages in many parts of the city, Bescom officials deny this. Sunday’s outage was due to a technical glitch at Somanahalli, a senior Bescom official said.

“We are not undertaking any maintenance work. It is all done by KPTCL. We are only announcing the areas and dates of outages. We have also ensured that no maintenance work is being done on weekends,” he said. With more power cuts likely, the state government’s promise to make this summer easy for citizens sounds hollow. One has to wait and see whether Bescom is able to manage the rest of summer until the arrival of rains.
