Banglore: Intermittent power cuts disrupted normal life in the city as the electricity supply authorities resorted to loadshedding in the wake of sudden surge in demand.

"The load has increased and the demand is more than the allotted capacity. Hence intermittent loadshedding has had to be imposed in the city," a senior official of Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) said.

Several areas in the city bore the brunt of power cuts. "There is a power shortage and in order to manage the load, there will have to be power cuts," the official added.
The past one week has seen the the gap between the demand and supply increasing by 20% from the earlier 10-15%. The official attributed this to increased demand from industries and agricultural sectors.

The authorities are expecting the situation to deteriorate as the pre-summer load is bound to go up after this month. "The average consumption now is 110 million units per day. But it would go up to 130-135 million units after January. That is the reason why we have asked the consumers to cut down on power consumption," said the official.
