Police to peel off tinted films for free

Traffic police have set up 10 centres across the city where they will help car owners take off tinted films from their vehicle’s windows and windshields free of cost.

The initiative was taken after traffic police received complaints that roadside garages were charging exorbitant amount—as much as Rs300-Rs500—to remove the tinted films.

Additional commissioner of police (traffic), MA Saleem, said traffic police officials would be at the 10 centres from 9 am to 6 pm to help people remove the tinted films from their cars.

Recently, Supreme Court held that dark-tinted films on cars’ windows and windshields were illegal. In wake of this order, city traffic police gave time till May 19 to car owners in the city to remove the tinted films from their vehicles. Saleem said the police wanted to ensure full compliance of the SC’s order and thus had set up 10 centres to help car owners take off the tinted films free of cost.

If, after May 19, a car in the city is found with dark-tinted film on its windows, the car owner will have to cough up penalty.
