Small could turn out to be beneficial for Janata Dal (Secular) chief HD Deve Gowda. The JD(S) has won just three seats, but with UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi deciding not to seek the support of larger parties to reach the magic figure of 273, JD(S) could play an active role in the government formation at the Centre.
State JD(S) president HD Kumaraswamy left for Delhi on Sunday evening to hold talks with the Congress high command to realise his immediate agenda of finding a place in the Union cabinet. Kumaraswamy, along with Mandya MP N Cheluvarayaswamy, held discussions with his father Deve Gowda on Sunday morning to decide on the future course of action.
With the UPA performing better than expected, the JD(S) leaders are convinced that their bargaining power has eroded. Kumaraswamy did not mince words while admitting “we are ready to support the UPA, and since they are in a position to pick and choose their partners we can’t join them on our terms.”
