It took over 30 years for Dr Ambedkar Medical College authorities to realise that a peon had used forged birth certificate to join their college in 1982. What is more, he even got promoted as junior lab technician in 1992.

The incident came to light when the welfare association of the college staff brought this to the notice of the authorities concerned. They filed a complaint on Tuesday with the DJ Halli police station.

College principal Stanley John, in his complaint, said that S Swamy had joined the college in 1982 and continues to serve as junior lab assistant in biochemistry department.

At the time of joining, Swamy had submitted his educational certificates, marks card stating his date of birth. As per that he was born on February 1, 1961.

But the staff association, based on a complaint, verified the records at the school he studied and found that he was born in 1952.

When Swamy did not reply to a show-cause notice, the management decided to file a complaint with the police seeking detailed investigations.

Police said that as per their preliminary investigation, Swamy had forged the marks card, altered his date of birth to secure a job.
The police are yet to ascertain the amount of forgery and cheating involved.

However, it is shocking that the college management, which routinely checks the records of every candidate before appointment, failed to notice the fraud all these years, the police said.
