Driving without being held up at every traffic signal can soon become a reality. The traffic department is planning to synchronise traffic movement at 10 major corridors in four months. Additional commissioner of police (traffic and security) MA Saleem said that 10 corridors have been identified (See box).

“We have decided to implement this project on these corridors within the next four months. We will extend the synchronised signals system at other corridors too,” said Saleem.
Earlier, the project was implemented on JC Road as a pilot project, but it was a failure due to heavy traffic flow from Minerva Circle to the BBMP head office. “We’re working on a solution and will implement it soon,” said another officer.

The synchronisation of the traffic signals is expected to help free flow of vehicular movement and will help curb traffic jam. It would cut down on travel time, bring down fuel consumption and reduce the city’scarbon footprint. There are nearly 336 signalised intersections in the city. Over 600 intersections are manually handled by the traffic police every day. The city police have a plan to set up 400 more signalised intersections in the city that falls under the B-Trac project. Most of these signals will come up on the city outskirts.

Due to metro construction work and other road works, the traffic synchronisation project was not carried out. “We are not able to synchronise all the signals of the city due to improper road designing. We were able to do this only on long-distance roads, such as Mysore road, Chord Road, and Dr Rajkumar Road,” an official said.He added that there will be no synchronisation in cross-roads.
