With assembly elections fast approaching, the BJP government is taking up asphalting and repairing of 6,000 km length of roads coming under various urban local bodies in the state, excluding the areas under BBMP.

The government has directed district administrations to complete the work by April. Municipal administration minister Balachandra Jarkiholi said the department is spending `1,800 crore for the purpose. “The cabinet has taken a decision to provide `15 crore to each municipal corporation and `5 crore to each of the town municipalities and other local bodies coming under the department. In charge ministers will give clearance for the project after consulting local MLAs which will then be approved by the secretary of the department. Instructions have been given all 209 local bodies to clear the tenders by January end,” the minister said. All districts, except six including Belgaum and Bellary, are finalising the tenders. “For the construction of roads, a budgetary allocation of `200 crore has been made. We are going to avail of a loan of `400 crore from Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation as a lot of funds are required for the implementation of the project,” he said.

Jarkiholi said `30 lakh will be spent per 1 km of road — 80% for construction of roads and 20% for drainage.

“As the election is nearing, MLAs are showing more interest now. Most districts have already sent action plans to the state government. We received a proposal to repair 15,000 km stretch of roads in within the limits of local bodies. For the time being, we have taken up development of a 6,000 km stretch,” he said.

Commenting on the elections to 209 local bodies which are due in a couple of months, the minister said office of the registrar general and census commissioner agreed to provide data of 2011 census by March and the government is expected to convey its stand on the reservation list when the SC seeks the reply. It can be recalled that the state election commission approached the Karnataka HC for submitting reservation list in time. The matter is now before the SC. The minister said if elections to local bodies get delayed, the government will not have any choice but to appoint administration officers.
