Theme holidays have been popular for quite some time now and travel agents in the country have been offering a plethora of choices totourists like heritage tourism, cultural tourism, medical tourism etc.
But for the very first time, gay tourism will be promoted. No different from other forms of tourism, they are specifically designed and tailor-made for gay men who are keen on spending quality time in comfortable places.
This is the first time this sector will be discussed and its potentials explored in the three-day Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) convention in Bangalore.
Speaking to DNA about the concept, Indjapink director, Sanjay, said, “This concept is still new to India unlike other countries. But after the recent Supreme Court hearing, people are gradually learning to accept them. There is great potential for gay tourism to grow. All gay men demand respect and space; we should understand the fact that what people do in their bedroom is strictly personal.’’
Indjapink is the only Indian company organisingpackages for gays since the past 11 months. Sanjay will talk to IATO conference members and tourism department officials on gay tourism’s potential.
Most gays tourists are from the US and Western Europe. Though considerable number of gays from India enquire about these tours, bookings are still limited. Experts also said that there are more such queries coming in from gays than lesbians in India.
“A large number of gays travel to Rajasthan, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Himalayas and north eastern states. While very few come to Karnataka, there is huge potential in the state and we are keen on exploring its possibilities. Kerala is over-exploited and people are keen on visiting Coorg, Nagarhole tiger reserve, coastal areas and western Karnataka. The state tourism department should help promote these destinations,’’ Sanjay added.
While Sanjay said that they ensure a harassment free atmosphere for tourists, he admitted that gay men are often subjected to embarrassing situations. “For instance, a driver once told a gay couple that next time bring your wives to enjoy such picturesque destinations,” said Sanjay.
