Now cycle to Bangalore's MG Road, parking is no problem

Bangalore is changing gear to become a bicycle-friendly city. To encourage more people to pedal their way to eateries, shops and workplaces, a non-profit movement is setting up cycle stands in various parts of the city.

GoCycle introduced the first such stand to the public on Sunday near Koshy’s Restaurant, St Mark’s Road. It was inaugurated by home minister  R Ashoka.

“We want to encourage people to cycle and also want to put up stands in public places such as malls, commercial complexes and movie halls,” said G Krishnamurthy (Krish) of GoCycle,  the brain behind the movement. In this, he is supported by DS Navin, Renu Ojha, Suresh Srinivasan and Ranganath L Rao.  “The cycling movement has been supported by industry leaders. Today, as more and more Bangaloreans take to cycling, we are constantly faced with the problem of where to park cycles. GoCycle is committed to making parking easier. As a first step, we began at Koshy’s,” Murthy said. This cycle stand is sponsored by Tata Structura.

“People have suggested stands in more places and we have started negotiations. We are looking for 6ft by 3-4ft space. We also need sponsorships from companies for setting up the stands. We will be putting up 10 stands in the next three months,” said Murthy.

“Some of the locations we are considering are outside the Lalbagh Botanical gardens and near popular malls,” he added.
