Building by-laws are routinely violated in the city, and so far, there has been little regular monitoring to even understand the scale of the violations.

At long last, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has woken up to the need to regularly monitor construction activity to check violations in the laws.

The BBMP has now decided to institute vigilance squads to monitor compliance to building laws. Mayor SK Nataraj said on Friday, “Cases of violation of building by-laws and the construction of illegal buildings are rising. To check this and stem the problem in the bud, we have decided to set up three vigilance squads. Each squad will have three engineers, who will check all construction works in the city, especially of commercial complexes. Any violations can thus be checked early. Once these violations are discovered, demolition will be conducted.”

Admitting that three squads with four members each might not adequately serve the purpose of monitoring all violations of building by-laws in the city, the mayor said that though there will only be three such squads to begin with, the number will be increased at a later date. The mayor added that alongside monitoring violations in building by-laws, the squads will also ensure that no illegal constructions occur over stormwater drains.

Such construction has, in the past, blocked the passage of water in stormwater drains, causing immense hardship during the monsoon.

In other announcements, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board announced that underground drainage connections would be provided in areas which previously fell under the jurisdiction of the CMC.
